THE LEAD — The Vermont State University Lyndon Hornets women's basketball team's early scoring run and all around team effort helped obtain a 73-40 home victory over the Lesley University Lynx on Tuesday night in the Hornet's conference opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lyndon started the first quarter on a 16-0 scoring run and led 19-8 at the end of the quarter.
  • The hosts extended their lead up to 43-15 at halftime.
  • The Hornets held the Lynx to 25 second half points, while adding 30 more points of their own to account for the 73-40 final.
  • The Hornets swarmed Lesley with scoring contributions throughout their team, scoring 30 points off the bench. The hosts picked up 14 steals and nine blocks as a team, and held the Lynx to just 25.8% shooting on the day. Three-point shooting remained a focus for the Hornets, picking up 11 makes on 33 attempts. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • VTSU sophomore wing Skylar Begay (Tucson, AZ) was the only Hornet with double digit scoring with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting adding four rebounds and two blocks. Five other Hornets would add nine points of their own as Lyndon took a balanced scoring approach to the contest.
  • Senior guard Ella Huntington (Taylorsville, UT) dished out a team-high seven assists in 19 minutes of play as the leading playmaker for the Hornets. Freshman forward Keira Quintal (Sheffield, VT) paced the team in both rebounds with seven and blocks with three in a strong defensive outing.  
  • Leila Chisholm (Santa Barbara, Calif.) led Lesley by scoring 14 points and was tied for the Lynx's team-high in rebounding with nine. Madalynn Biagi (Lincoln, Calif.) and Chelsea McIntosh (Martinsburg, W. Va.) both added nine rebounds of their own, in what proved to be a tough day offensively for the Lynx. Senior guard Baileigh Sinaman-Daniel (Stafford, Va.) played a career-high 24 minutes in the setback.
