THE LEAD – The No. 1 seeded-Simmons University Tennis team squared off against the No. 4 seed Lesley University with the Sharks advancing to the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Championship after taking down the Lynx, 4-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Simmons got out to the 1-0 lead via a doubles win as Emilie Lapointe and Emma Parsons doubled up their opponents on the No. 2 doubles court, 6-3.
- Then, the Sharks No. 1 duo of Masha Shutts and Amoli Vad sealed the overall doubles point with their 7-5 victory.
- Despite the point already secured by the Sharks, Grace Burke and Laura Lowe finished off the sweep with a grueling 7-6 (10-8) win in No. 3 action.
- NAC conference rules state that conference tournament matches must be played to decision" meaning the Sharks needed just three more wins in singles action to seal the victory.
- Vad got the job done in No. 3 singles with a comfortable 6-1, 6-4 win. Then, the Lynx were able to steal a win in No. 4 action as sophomore Anna Stamp (Belchertown, Mass.) picked up a 6-3, 6-3 victory to bring the score to 2-1 in favor of Simmons.
- Veteran Lowe got the better of her No. 5 counterpart (6-2, 6-4) right before Shutts clinched the Championship appearance for the Sharks with her 7-5, 6-3 triumph in No. 1 action.
- LU first year Emily Laperriere (Tewksbury, Mass.) was leading her No. 6 singles match 1-0 in the first set when the match was decided.
