THE LEAD – Despite winning all three doubles matches, the Lesley University Women's Tennis program dropped another 4-3 decision in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action, falling to host Thomas College on Sunday action at the North Street Tennis Courts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- For the first time this season, the Lynx swept doubles action as juniors Mary Osucha (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Lucy Boyce (Marshfield, Mass.) posted a 6-4 win out of the top spot. Senior Jessica Legendre (Leesville, La.) and sophomore Anna Stamp (Belchertown, Mass.) earned a 7-6 (8-6) tiebreak win in No. 2 doubles while first year Hayley Jones (Berthoud, Colo.) and junior Tali-Anna Sutherland (Bridgeport, Conn.) each recorded their first doubles wins of the season out of the No. 3 position with a 6-2 win.
- Due to the new NCAA rule change with doubles only counting towards one-point towards the match decision, the Lynx carried over the 1-0 lead into singles play despite going 3-0 in doubles action.
- Osucha and Legendre cruised in the top two singles matches, each only dropping one game to help Lesley take a 3-0 lead in the match.
- The Terriers picked up points in No. 4, No. 3 and No. 6 singles to even the match at 3-3 and with the decision coming down to the No. 5 showdown between Jones and Lillian Mickel. The Thomas first year prevailed in a gutsy 7-5, 7-5 score to lift the hosts to a 4-3 comeback victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Under previous years' NCAA scoring format, the Lynx would have been victorious in the match, 5-4.
- Legendre moves to 10-0 on the year in her combined singles and doubles play.
- The doubles win for Jone was the first of her collegiate career.
UP NEXT
- Lesley returns to the courts on Wednesday, Sept. 17 for a 4:00 PM NAC tilt against the newest addition to the league, the Simmons University Sharks. The Sharks joined the NAC this offseason as associate members after the Great Northeast Athletic Conference made the decision to no longer sponsor women's tennis.
