THE LEAD – The Lesley University women's tennis program fell in its season-opener to UMass Dartmouth, 4-3, on Tuesday afternoon at the Beren Tennis Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lynx picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to secure the point in doubles play as juniors Mary Osucha (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Lucy Boyce (Marshfield, Mass.) earned a 6-2 win in the top pairing while senior Jessica Legendre (Leesville, La.) and sophomore Anna Stamp (Belchertown, Mass.) registered a 6-3 win in the second slot.
- Osucha and Legendre cruised to 6-0, 6-0 wins in top singles play to give Lesley its three points on the afternoon but the Corsairs rallied to capture No. 3 through No. 6 singles to steal the 4-3 win.
- With the match tied at 3-3, Boyce and UMD first year Mya Dean battled for the deciding point. Boyce took the opening set by a 7-5 score before Dean recouped a 6-4 win to send it to a third set. Dean held strong to take the third set by a 6-2 score and put UMD in the win column in the season-opener, 4-3.
- Stamp fell in No. 4 singles play to Alyson Tobias, 6-1, 6-2 in a competitive showdown.
- First year Hayley Jones (Berthoud, Colo.) made her collegiate debut in the setback, falling in No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-0 to Sofia Beltran.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The match was the eighth meeting between the two programs with UMD controlling the all-time series with a 7-1 record including wins the past two years in Lesley's season-opener.
- Osucha and Legendre improve to a combined 6-0 in their last three matches vs. the Corsairs with a pair of wins in singles and doubles action in 2023, 2024 and 2025.
- This marked the first time since the 2019 season that the Lynx opened a new campaign with a home match, with their last seasonal opener at home coming with a 6-3 victory over Albertus Magnus back on Sept 1, 2019.
