THE LEAD - After a very hot streak, the Lynx were handed a blowout loss yesterday. They came into their doubleheader determined to prove that it was just a fluke. In their first game against Rutgers-Newark, they did just that. A six-run first inning set the stage for the eventual 12-2 win. They then faced off against the Vikings, and things didn't go their way. Despite fighting hard, the Lynx took their first mercy rule loss of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1 vs. Rutgers-Newark)

  • With two outs in the 1st, Gerlys Martinez hit his first homer of the season and brought Caden Shott along for the ride. Owen Finnegan then singled, Anthony Nyhuis doubled, and Nathan Young walked to load the bases. A Jacob Brown single drove in two.

  • Andres Moreno then walked to load them up again. Logan Shudy singled to center to add two more to the Lynx lead.

  • Young started the 3rd with a single, and a triple from Moreno brought him in. Another triple, this time from Shudy, put the Lynx up 8-0.

  • The 4th started with a Martinez walk, and a homer from Finnegan added to the carnage.

  • Lesley wasn't done yet. Martinez got plunked to start the 6th, Finnegan smacked a double. Nyhuis popped up to score Martinez, and a wild pitch allowed Finnegan to slide home.

  • In the 7th with their backs against the wall, the Scarlet Raiders hit a two-run homer, but it was all they accomplished in the 12-2 game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game 1 vs. Rutgers-Newark)

  • Owen Finnegan led the offense. He went 4 for 5 with a home run and a double. He drove in two and scored three for himself. His four hits and eight total bases both tied NAC season high records

  • On the mound, Jacob Nemergut got his second win (2-0). He pitched three innings and gave up a hit and a walk while striking out three.

  • Logan Czachowski also had a great game. He also pitched three innings; he gave up two hits and a walk while striking out two.

  • The collective three triples and two home runs are both team highs in a game this season.

  • For the Scarlet Raiders, RJ Kernan tried to carry the team on his back. He went 2 for 3 with a home run. He drove in both of the team's runs and accounted for one himself.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2 vs.Salem State)

  • The Vikings started the bottom of the first with a single. They then stole second and third. The next batter walked on four straight and stole second too. A triple scored them both, and a double after that put them up 3-0.

  • The Lynx got their first hit in the 3rd but couldn't do much with it.

  • With a full count and two outs, the Lynx walked a man. The next batter singled. The one after that walked as well, and a single past the 2nd baseman drove in another run.

  • The Lynx were finally able to get things going in the 4th. Grant Bazinet walked. Martinez singled, and Nyhuis hit a single to left to score Bazinet. Then Young hit a single to left to score Martinez and close the gap.

  • The Vikings respond by getting a man on via error and yet another triple to send him home. On a wild pitch, they managed another run.

  • The next man up walked on four pitches, and then the Vikings' fourth triple of the game scored him too.

  • Neither team did anything in the 5th. The Lynx couldn't get anything going in the 6th either, but the Vikings broke up the drought with a homer to dead center.

  • The Lynx then loaded the bases for Salem State to smack a base-clearing triple. A single drove another man home, and the score was 12-2.

  • Lesley had to do something. Young reached on an error, and Moreno and Shundy singled to load the bases. Shott was hit by a pitch and recorded an RBI. Martinez doubled and scored another two.

  • In the bottom of the 7th, the Vikings loaded up the bases, but the Lynx were able to get out unscathed.

  • The Lynx then loaded the bases up for themselves, but this time Salem State refused for them to score.

  • The bottom of the 8th started with a Viking being plunked, the next doubling, and the one after walking on four pitches to lead the bases. The next batter was hit, the one after walked, and a sac fly made the score 15-5, and the Lynx were mercy ruled.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game 2 vs. Salem State)

  • Martinez did everything he could for the Lynx today. He went 2 for 4 with a double. He drove in two and scored a run while never striking out.

  • Despite only pitching for an inning, James Labombard was able to hold the Vikings offense to three unearned runs, two hits, and a walk.

  • Nolan Currier of the Vikings hit two triples when he went 2 for 4. He drove in three of the team's runs and scored two himself.
