THE LEAD — The Lynx open their Florida play against Vassar College. Lesley was hot off their opening day win and hoped to continue rolling into Florida. The Brewers' pitching didn't allow the Lynx to get anything going, and they were able to pull away. Lesley started to come back late, but a 6-run 9th inning sealed Vassar's win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
The first couple of innings didn't see much action - the Lynx turned a double play in the 2nd but went 1-2-3 in back-to-back innings.
-
Both of the first two Brewers up to bat in the 3rd walked, and after a failed bunt, Payton Albin walked another batter to load the bases.
-
On the first pitch of the next at-bat, Jack Johnson of Vassar smacked a grand slam.
-
The Lynx were able to get out of that inning and saw the Brewers go three up three down in the 4th.
-
In the 5th, a single, a walk, a fielder's choice, and an error resulted in another run for the Brewers.
-
They weren't done yet. A Vassar single put men on first and second, then a 4 pitch walk loaded the bases. The next batter got plunked, and the Brewers were up 6-0.
-
The Lynx had their best offensive inning up to this point in the 5th. They were able to get three walks but weren't able to bring anyone home.
-
Both teams went 1-2-3 in the 6th.
-
The Brewers started the 7th with a triple and a ground rule double added to their lead.
-
The Lynx finally put their foot down. Jacob Brown doubled down the left field line, the first Lesley hit of the game, and found his way to third on a wild pitch. A Logan Shudy sac fly drove Brown home.
-
Then Justin Owolabi walked and stole second. Next up, Andres Moreno singled to left field, and thanks to an error by the fielder, the Lynx were able to close the game 7-2.
-
Neither team got much going in the 8th, but the Brewers were unstoppable in the 9th.
-
The first batter reached on a fielding error, then the second walked on 4 pitches. Then a single loaded the bases. The Lynx walked in a run next, and a wild pitch brought in another.
-
The next batter walked on a full count to reload the bases, and the next batter also walked to make the score 10-2 with no outs.
-
The next Brewer hit into a fielder's choice, and the Lynx got the out at home. The batter also hit into a fielder's choice, and the Lynx got the out at third, 11-2.
-
A triple drove in two more runs. But a strikeout got the Lynx out of the inning.
-
Lesley started the bottom of the 9th with hope after the first batter walked, but three quick outs sealed their fate.
